On October 26th, juniors and seniors in the biomedical pathway attended a conference at Emory University Conference Center. The topic of the conference was "Bridging the Sciences: Advances in HIV, Viral Hepatitis and Emerging Viruses", and was a part of France Atlanta 2017. Students heard top scientists from France and the US give presentations about new discoveries and research of infectious diseases.
The first speaker was Monsef Benkirane, the director of the Institute of Human Genetics CNRS in Montpellier France and the head of Laboratory of Molecular Virology. He delivered a presentation on HIV replication and biomarkers of reservoirs.
The second speaker was Guido Silvestri, Professor and Vice-Chair for Research in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at the Emory University School of Medicine. He gave a presentation on new paradigms to decipher host-pathogen interactions.
The final speaker the students heard was Olivier Schwartz, the head of the Virus & Immunity Unit at Insitut Pasteur in Paris, France. He gave a presentation on HIV immune evasion and reservoirs.
Students were able to learn about the field of virology and interact with prominent international scientists.
