During this trip both biomedical and engineering students learned techniques in which water is naturally able to be filtered. The nature conservationist at the nature preserve also explained that contaminated water doesn't just effect humans, but animals too. The trip also consisted of students canoeing down the Chattahoochee to experience the importance of the nature surrounding the industrialized environment. This in turn showed students how important it is to preserve nature in order to maintain a clean water supply.

On October 26th, juniors and seniors in the biomedical pathway attended a conference at Emory University Conference Center. The topic of the conference was "Bridging the Sciences: Advances in HIV, Viral Hepatitis and Emerging Viruses", and was a part of France Atlanta 2017. Students heard top scientists from France and the US give presentations about new discoveries and research of infectious diseases.
The first speaker was Monsef Benkirane, the director of the Institute of Human Genetics CNRS in Montpellier France and the head of Laboratory of Molecular Virology. He delivered a presentation on HIV replication and biomarkers of reservoirs. The second speaker was Guido Silvestri, Professor and Vice-Chair for Research in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at the Emory University School of Medicine. He gave a presentation on new paradigms to decipher host-pathogen interactions. The final speaker the students heard was Olivier Schwartz, the head of the Virus & Immunity Unit at Insitut Pasteur in Paris, France. He gave a presentation on HIV immune evasion and reservoirs. Students were able to learn about the field of virology and interact with prominent international scientists. Students learned about the program, the different pathways, and the courses offere. We had an incredibly successful turn out- pictures coming soon!
The seniors in the biomedical pathway of the STEM program are working on a public outreach campaign to improve children's oral health. They will be partnering with a local school to spread information and provide essential hygiene supplies. More information will be coming soon. Below is a PowerPoint detailing the campaign.

The guest speaker taught students about the water filtration process, as well as the benefits of tap water as opposed to bottled or filtered water. Students asked questions about the water filtration process and learned all about their local water source.
Yesterday, the AP Calculus BC students took a field trip to Georgia Military college in Milledgeville, Georgia. Students toured the historic campus learned about the programs the college has to offer. Students also learned about various opportunities for STEM careers in the military.
This year, the 9th grade students in the biomedical pathway are working on a cross-curricular project about water purity. For the first part of this project, the students collected local water samples and tested them for ammonia and other contaminants. Photos taken by LSHS Senior Madison Karr.
